In our society, electronics and technology is
used in our everyday lives and its hard to imagine what our lives would be like
without it. The connection between society and technology began long ago when
early humans created simple tools to aid them in their everyday lives. Its
fascinating to see how far we’ve come through the technology we use today. The idea of robots came from theater and it was
Karel Capek, a Czech playwriter who started the term “Robot” which means work
in Czech. In the beginning, robots have
evolved from being able to perform simple automated task to now being capable
to perform surgery even more accurately than humans do. The use of robots has
been more common each day and because of this people are questioning whether it
can help or hurt society. There are many pros and cons to having robots. In
lecture, Professor talked about how Ford wanted to create an automobile that
would be accessible for everyone and not just the rich. While he was able to do
so, there were positives and negatives. Because of this, Ford was able to
create a lot of jobs for people however a lot of workers complained that they
were being treated like machines.
Technology has helped tremendously with art as
well. Long ago it took a lot of effort for one to create a great piece of
artwork. Today, because of the help of technology it is easier than ever to
create a simple work of art. Photography is an an example of how technology has
affected art.
Throughout my life I have watched a couple
movies that involve robots and I think its interesting to see the different
roles that the robots play in these movies. When thinking about how society responds to industrialization, Big Hero 6 pops up in my mind. In this movie a gentle giant name Baymax was created to medically help others. Even though this movie is fictional, the role Baymax plays in the movie has actually already been created. Society is dependent on technology in the medical field and in the near future I believe we will see robots like Baymax in real life.

In Walter Benjamin's essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" he points out a couple of things. First, his opinion of the idea of authenticity is addressed. He believes that mechanical reproduction through photography and films lack authentic aura stating that "the unique value of the authentic work of art has its basis in ritual, the location of its original use value". He also states that societies values and human perception alters over time. Because of these changes in taste it affects the aura.

I enjoyed reading your blog and agree with the majority of your opinions. It is no question that technology has changed the way we live our daily life. Everywhere we go you see people on their laptops, cellphones, or some kind of technology. The human society has become so accustomed to using technology that we depend on it in order to properly function.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with your opinion that robots are very resourceful for the human world. Their efficiency has become the reason behind people are competing for job employments. The reason is because robots are becoming a better source for efficiently in the workplace. If you think about it, robots do not need any breaks for lunch or what is regulated by law. They also do not need to get paid.
Overall we both agree on the importance that technology is to human life. We can no longer live without it. It could be taken as great in a development world. but at the same time we are losing that feeling of independence. Something our generation did not get to witness but before the industrial revolution there was a lot of labor work instead of modern day technology.
Hi Chanelle, as what Antonio said, mainly I agree with what you've pointed out. The technology has always been playing an extraordinary role in art and our daily life. Besides, it is true that on one hand, our society is responding to the industrialization through movies like Big Hero 6 or Transformers like what you've wrote. On the other hand, art, movies and literatures are also encouraging the industrialization and invention of robots. There may come some new ideas of robots in movies which are still not impossible to be invented with the technology today, but which may motivate scientists. Finally, I feel like when we are talking about the bad sides of robots, there may be lots more than the "lose of authenticity". The information security and morality problems could also be taken into consideration. I like your blog;)
