Our final topic this week is about space and art. After watching the first video that showed what our world would look like every 10 seconds out, its crazy to think how small our Earth is compared to the rest of the universe. As Professor said, since the beginning of time people have been trying to figure out and understand our universe and these objects in our sky. In the beginning stars had to be differentiated from planets and were given names. People back then believed the heavens held greater power over earthly existence and many were fearful of the sky after witnessing natural phenomina such as a lunar exclipse or seeing a comet in the sky. Years of trying to understand the sky led to astronomy, which is considered the first science.

Nicolaus Copernicus, a very important mathamatician and astronomer during the time of the Renaissance was known for his model of the universe. In the model that he created, he placed the sun in the middle of the universe rather than the earth. However this idea of having the sun in the middle of the universe was not new and other people have come up with similar ideas. What seperated Copernicus model with others was the mathematical detail he put into his structure. Copernicus postulated only earths revolution rotation about the sun and the tilt of the earths rotational axis. Because of this he was able to explain the observed motion of the sky. Fear of the church prevented him from exposing his ideas and ultimately delayed the publication of his ideas.

Since his work, there have been great improvements in the study of the universe. After World War II, contemporary space age development began and during this time the creation of different bombs took place such as the first atomic bomb which had two goals at the time which were to end WWII and by possessing this massive weapon being able to take control of foreign policy.

Another significant moment in space was the first human to reach space. Russian cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin becamethe first human to be in space by making a 108 minute orbital flight in his Vistok One aircraft. After his success in being able to make it into space successfully it led to another significant achievement which was the first human to land on the moon named Neil Armstrong in July 1969.

So far it is clear that we have already made great progress in the space age and who knows what we might be able to do in the future. With the help of movies and tv shows we have a picture in our mind of what its like to be out there in Space. Maybe in the future we will be able to travel to Space
or even find a whole new world.

Chanelle,
ReplyDeleteI really liked reading your blog. I liked how you talked about the first human to space and then went to talk about the first man to walk on the moon. Two very important dates in our time. Anyways, your blog made me very interested in reading more about space.
Thanks
Delaney
